肥皂簡單的說就是 : 油脂＋（氫氧化鈉＋水)

油脂 : 油脂是一般的天然植物油與動物油，葵花油、橄欖油、芥花油、豬油、牛油，玫瑰果油、月見草油、澳洲胡桃油等，任何可以想得到的油脂 ，都可以拿來製作香皂。

鹼性物質 : 一般採用取自於海鹽成份的「氫氧化鈉」(NaOH)
(氫氧化鉀或碳酸鈉等鹼質皆可)
