甘肅省政府規劃，位在甘肅西北端、屬中國歷史文化景點名城的敦煌市，可望從目前的縣級市升格為地級市（類似省轄市，但代管縣市）。

中新社報導，甘肅省政府11日公布「甘肅省城鎮體系規劃（2013-2030年）」，主要內容是甘肅將建構及推動「新型城鎮化健康發展的綜合性空間平台」，同時提到敦煌市將升格為地級市。

規劃中提到，甘肅將積極穩妥推進行政區劃優化調整。未來，敦煌升格為地級市後，還將與酒泉、嘉峪關這2個地級市合併。

位在甘肅西北端、毗鄰新疆的敦煌市，目前由地級的酒泉市管轄，人口18萬人，屬中國歷史文化景點名城，擁有莫高窟、鳴沙山、月牙泉、玉門關及陽關等知名景點。

但中國大陸蘭州大學社會學副教授焦若水認為，敦煌是沙漠中的綠洲城市，生態脆弱，快速的城市化將導致人口快速激增，環境資源壓力大，常住居民和遊客量增多伴隨著城市病，為世界遺產的保護和利用帶來不小的挑戰。(中央社)
